Why is it that change is so hard?
Have you ever wondered that?
Let’s say that your goal for 2025 is to be a better husband, or to quit porn, or stop being a weak, passive man who’s drifting through life.
Why is doing any of those things so difficult to do?
There are a lot of reasons, but here’s one that may be as big of a culprit as any other:
Analysis Paralysis.
The more choices you have the harder change becomes.
Here’s what that may look like if crushing passivity is your goal.
Let’s say that you know you’re just going through the motions each day and living a passionless life. This bugs you to no end, but you don’t know what to do to shake this feeling and get back to who you’re meant to be.
So, you start thinking about options and how to get back in the fight. You come up with a list of possible things that might help.
- Join a gym and start exercising
- Read your Bible everyday
- Pull up your bootstraps and just try harder than you have been
- Start tracking your calories and losing some weight
- Join a Bible study
- Get some counseling
Now, pause for a minute and put yourself in this guy’s shoes (just assume you have the same size feet).

When you review that list, how does that make you feel?
If you’re like most people, you might start to feel like it’s a bit daunting. Like picking one of the options only leads to more questions - not solutions.
This is the thing about analysis paralysis and change: the more choices you have the harder the decision-making gets. When you can’t decide what to do, you coast some more and hunker down in status quo.
What you need more than anything else in this situation is CLARITY.
Until you get to the point where you can make a clear decision that is behavior-based, you’re not ready to change.
To create movement toward the change you want to see, you must create clear and specific steps.
I hear this all the time when coaching or counseling men in my porn recovery program or Better Man program.
“I want to change! I really do! So just tell me, exactly, what I need to do!”
This is the sentiment of most men and they’re right. To create momentum that builds toward long-term change, they really do need exact, specific steps to take.
So do you. (
It’s my belief that most men aren’t truly resistant to change (although it often appears that way). What they’re really resisting is the mental anguish of indecision.
Maybe that’s where you’re at today too.
If so, clarity of what steps to take may be exactly what you need.
Do this:
Determine the change you want to make.
Pick ONE idea that may help.
Determine ONE action step to take. (I suggest this as step #1)
Do that thing.
Clarity dissolves resistance and is key to creating change.
