A while back, I read a great book called Make Your Bed, by Admiral William McRaven. (super good book - highly recommend it!)
In it, he made this comment that I think is worthy of slowing down and considering today.
He said this:
"If you can't do the little things right, you will never do the big things right."
He's right, of course.
Think about some of the BIG things you'd like to do or change in your life today.
Maybe it's quitting an addiction that's plagued you for years.
Or losing 50 pounds that have crept on over the past 10 years.
Or fixing a marriage that's been neglected and is falling apart.
Or dealing with trauma from your past that holds you back and has held you down for most of your life.
Whatever it is, the question is likely the same:
How (exactly) do I make these BIG changes in my life?
The answer, at least according to Admiral McRaven, is to focus on the little things first.

This simple wisdom is counterintuitive but absolutely true.
In fact, if you're a follower of Jesus, you already know that. Here's what He said way before Admiral McRaven ever did:
“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.” Luke 16:10
This principle holds true in every area of your life.
So, do you really want to make those big changes in your life? Then do this:
Start being faithful to do what seems small - first.
- Read just a few pages of your Bible first thing each morning.
- Exercise a couple of times a week and put away the booze.
- Read just one chapter of a good book each day.
- Don't neglect date nights with your wife.
- Put away your devices and don't carry them around with you when you're home.
Or, as Admiral McRaven suggests, just make your bed each morning.
Most of us incorrectly believe that BIG change requires BIG movement. But that's not usually how it works in the real world.
Instead, momentum builds when you start small and - if done consistently over long periods of time - this is what leads to big change. That's way more common than the other way around.
So, if you want to go BIG - start super small.

P.S.
Do you struggle to do the things you know you should do?
We all do at times.
The key is to do the things you know to do - even when (and especially when!) you don't feel like it.
If you want to change and grow, discipline is the key. You don't need to know more. You just need to do more!
