"Dad, Do We Have To?"
The eye rolls. The sighs. The suddenly urgent homework.
Family devotion time had become a chore - for everyone.
I was losing my kids while trying to feed their souls and it felt defeating and pretty exhausting too.
Maybe you've been there.
You know you should lead spiritually, but it feels forced, awkward, or just falls flat.
The Stakes Are High
Here's what research shows:
- Kids who see faith lived out at home are 82% more likely to keep their faith (dang!)
- The father's spiritual influence outweighs all other factors (double dang!)
- Most faith foundations are set by age 13
"Train up a child in the way he should go..." (Proverbs 22:6)
I say this to remind you:
You're not just leading devotions - you're shaping their view of God - and shaping their futures, too!
3 Approaches That Can Help Make This Easier
1. Stop with Sermons, Start the Conversations
- Ask questions instead of lecturing or trying to preach what you heard last Sunday
- Share your own struggles and victories and be a real human with your family. Talk like you normally would - not like you "think" you need to.
- Let them question and doubt safely - in fact encourage them when they think hard and wonder out loud about stuff
Engagement beats information 🏠
2. Make It Active
- Take prayer walks together
- Act out Bible stories (seriously...they'll groan at first but LOVE this)
- Use video resources (Bible Project)
Movement helps messages stick 🏃🏻♂️
3. Keep It Short and Sweet
- 10 minutes max (seriously...this is enough!)
- One main point
- End with high-energy prayer (meaning: be positive, upbeat, thankful)

Then take action: Try one active devotion tonight. Even if it's just 5 minutes.
