- Nate Whitson -
Do you ever feel like you're blowing it as a dad?
If so, you're not alone.
My current reality is that I'm a dad of 4 daughters: 3 teenagers and 1 who is 10. (And you thought you had it rough!! 😆)
My wife is a stay-at-home mom and we educate our kids at home. By all accounts, everything is pretty good and our kids are doing pretty well.
Yet, just today I was driving to work and was deeply troubled by this nagging feeling that maybe that's not actually true. That, maybe all is NOT well and that - in fact - it's all my fault.
I had this sinking feeling that I have let my kids down. That I haven't done enough as a dad and that it's already too late for my 19 and 17-year-old kids, in particular.
It was this terrible sense that time had gotten away from me and I didn't do enough to create the culture that I wanted to see for my family, and it's too late to fix it now.
Have you ever felt that way? It's a terrible feeling.
Like maybe instead of building this...

You built this instead...

If that's you and you're feeling that way today I just want to encourage you to hang in there (I'm saying this to myself right now, too!).
Here's something you may need to hear again today:
Nothing is as bad or as good as it may seem in the moment!
Are there things you've screwed up and wish you could do differently? For sure.
Are there things you've done well and your kids will be so grateful for later on? No doubt about it.
So, be careful that you don't overemphasize the bad at the exclusion of the good the next time that nagging feeling starts to overwhelm you.
God has this incredible ability to take your best effort as a dad (as broken as it may be) and do great work with it.
So, keep fighting to be the dad that you want to be. You won't always get it right, but God's love for you and for your kids is enough.
You can trust Him with them.
He won't let you down.

P.S.
Do you ever get that sense that you messed up as a dad and it's too late to fix it now?
Me too.
But, I know deep down that it's not true. How do I know?
Because God.
Because He's got my kids and He can do all that we need Him to do to correct any mistakes or faults of my own.
Do you struggle like this as a dad? I'd love to hear your story and where you feel most challenged today? Email me and let me know.
