- Nate Whitson -
One of my best childhood friends is now a pastor at our church.
It's so cool to not only have him there for me, but to now see him have a role in my kids' lives is pretty amazing, too.
He was filling in for our youth pastor recently and two of my teenage daughters were in attendance for youth group when he was sharing his lesson with them that evening.
One of my daughters came home after youth group and said, "Dad, Uncle Brock spoke at group tonight and it was so good! And it's so weird...it's like you and him are the SAME GUY! All of his stories and the ways that he talks sound just like you! It's like his family and our family are living the exact same life. It's so crazy."
That's the way it works, isn't?
You end up looking, acting, and sounding just like the people you spend the most time with.
In all reality, it's not really that surprising at all!
You've probably heard it said that you become like the 5 people you spend the most time with. I think that's true.

Consider your own story for a minute.
Do you sound an awful lot like the people you're with the most?
Do you vote a lot like them?
Do you think a lot like them?
Do you joke a lot like them?
Chances are you do!
Why does this matter?
Because if you want to be more like Jesus and more of the man that you're meant to be, then you need to guard closely who you spend the most time with.
What music are you listening to?
What podcasts?
What authors?
What people are you choosing to spend time with on the weekends?
Who are you intentionally building deeper friendships and connections with?
All of these things matter more than you may think.
The bottom line: choose your friends carefully! You'll become just like the ones you spend the most time with - and your kids may end calling them Uncle!

P.S.
Are your friends helping you become a better man?
Do they make you more of the man God made you to be?
Whether you realize it or not, you're being influenced by and becoming more like the people you spend the most time with.
So guard your circle carefully.
