"Live not by lies."
I'm looking at a book on one of my bookshelves this morning that goes by this title. It's quite the catchy phrase, isn't it?
I mean, who would live by a lie?
Are YOU living by lies?
Maybe. Maybe not.
The first thing that I want to remind you of is God's enemy and what he's like. Here's some things Scriptures tell us about him.
He's...
The father of lies.
The accuser of the brethren.
Satan.
The devil.
The deceiver.
Now, you probably already know this, and you probably don't think you live by lies, but it's worth pondering for a few minutes today. The devil has been around WAY longer than you, and he is very crafty.
In fact, as dirty and dark as he is, that's not how he presents himself to you. He's so manipulative that he actually shows up in your life as an angel of light.
Light is good. Dark is bad.
So, when the devil whispers to you, it may feel good, right, and true. That's the big problem of believing what he says to you.
He'll say things like this (see if you've ever heard of any of these lies whispered to you):
- "You'll never be able to shake this sin. It's just who you are!"
- "You are disgusting! How could you _______________!"
- "It's not that big of a deal. Just a little won't hurt you."
- "Don't worry about it. God loves you, and He'll forgive you anyway. Just do it."
- "I know what's best for you. Don't listen to Him."
- "You're pretty tired right now. You deserve a break. Don't do that hard thing today. Do it tomorrow."
I could go on and on with example after example of lies just like this.
My point: LIVE NOT BY LIES!
Becoming the man that God made you to be requires you to live in the light. The true light! The truth. That is only found in what God says and not the little punk whispering that crap to you.
Here's what Jesus' brother, James, says about this and I hope you'll not only consider this today - but that you'll embrace it and do it yourself:
"So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you."
Do this, and you'll see God do in you what you've always wanted Him to do!
