For Christian Men
~ Helping men live intentional lives ~
I didn't realize it until today, but my phone has been speaking to me!
Usually, I’m the one speaking to it. But today I realized it’s been talking to me for quite a while.
It wasn’t Siri either. (Although she does jump in sometimes because my wife’s name is Sarah. I’ll say something like, “Hey, Sar, what’s for dinner?” and Siri pipes up with, “I’m sorry, I don’t know that.” 🤦🏻‍♂️)
No, the message has been coming from my phone every time I check my email.
Every time I open my phone, I’ve built a simple habit: I check my Bible app and read a verse or a short passage. I started doing that to keep my mind on Jesus throughout the day. Since I’m on my phone a lot, I figured I might as well make it work for me.
(Sidenote: it actually works. You should totally try it!)
But like most of us, when I’m on my phone, I also check my email inbox to see if anything interesting has come in.
That’s when I realized my phone has been speaking to me.
Every time I open my inbox it says:
“Connecting…
Checking for mail…
Updating…
Updated just now.”
It doesn’t say it out loud, but the message is still there.
And the more I thought about it, the more I realized that’s actually a pretty good model for our time with God.

First, you have to connect.
Before any message can be delivered, your phone has to connect to the server. The same is true for us.
If we want to receive what God has for us that day, we have to connect with Him first.
And the best way to do that is to open His Word and spend time there.
Next comes checking for messages.
Most of us are pretty good at talking to God. We pray, we ask, we tell Him what’s going on.
But when you open the Bible, you’re giving God the chance to speak to you.
You’re checking to see what He has already said.
Then comes the update.
Every day, the world is downloading messages into your mind.
Social media.
News.
Coworkers.
Culture.
Some of it is harmless. A lot of it is garbage.
That’s why you need God’s truth to overwrite the lies and reset your thinking.
When you connect with God and spend time in His Word, your mind gets updated with what's true.
And when you’re done, you can walk into the day knowing your system has been…
“Updated just now.”
Every day, the world is speaking to you.
The question is whether you’re taking time to reconnect with the One whose voice actually leads you in the right direction.
Don’t go through your day running on yesterday’s update. You need to...
Connect.
Check for His message.
Let Him update your thinking.
Every. Single. Day.
Then go live the day the way He designed you to live it: intentionally and fully updated!

P.S.
Most Christian men don’t struggle because they don’t love God.
They struggle because they don’t have a simple system that helps them reconnect, reset their thinking, and follow through on what they know they should do.
That’s exactly why I created the Start Super Small System and the program called Training For Change. It shows you how to build small, practical habits that help you stay connected to God, build discipline, and make the changes you’ve wanted to make for years.
If you’re tired of starting over and ready to build something that actually sticks, take a look at it here and get back in the fight.
