- Nate Whitson -
Why is it that changing your behavior is so stinking hard?
Think about your own story for a minute.
You probably have several stories that you could tell about how you've tried to change an area of your life but have failed to do so yet.
- Losing weight
- Getting in shape
- Fixing a bad mindset
- Restoring a broken relationship
- Building a spiritual discipline like prayer or Bible study
- Stopping a bad behavior like biting your fingernails or reacting in anger
Over and over again, we run up against this very human dilemma of wanting to change but struggling to do so.
We swear that 'This time I'm serious!'. We make a few small changes. Crush it for a couple days. Then, we fail to see tangible results in a short period of time and end up quitting altogether.
Sound familiar?
Probably so.
Maybe the lesson we need to learn is found in bamboo.

Bamboo is hard wood that is primarily found in Asia and has a very interesting detail about how it grows that might help you learn how to grow as well.
When it starts to grow it begins by digging deep roots that expand and spread out far below the ground. It's one of the longest processes in nature. In fact, it takes about five years before you'll see bamboo first shoot out of the ground. But when it does, it appears to grow seemingly out of nowhere. In just six months, it grows from a bamboo shoot to over 90' tall!
The lesson?
The habits that you're creating and the behaviors that you're working on need time to grow!
The problem?
We're impatient people!
We live in a microwave society that wants instant growth, instant satisfaction, and instant results.
We'd never say that, of course. But it's absolutely what we expect to happen.
When it doesn't - we quit.
"I've done this diet for 4 weeks now and I'm still not in shape!"
"I've invested money for several years now, and it's hardly growing at all!"
"I've been trying to fix this relationship for months, and we're still a mess!"
But that's not how growth happens, is it?
What you need to know is that your efforts aren't being wasted!
That seed of change is growing.
As Scriptures say, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
So, don't give up.
It takes time. But when that bamboo in your life is ready - it won't take long to see incredible results!
Just keep doing the hard, right things, and you'll reap the harvest you're working for one of these days.
