- Nate Whitson -
Life is a lot like the stock market.
Sometimes it's up and you think you're all set, no worries, all is well.
And sometimes it's down, and you think it's all over, you're finished, and nothing is working anymore.
As you may (or may not) know, my 9-5 is spent working as a financial advisor. My particular expertise and favorite conversations at work are about planning for the future and helping people retire with confidence.
What's tough about what I do, though, is that I have no control over the product that they're buying - the stock market.
Sometimes I look like a genius.
Other times, they wonder what the heck I'm doing and why they're paying me anything just to lose them money.
I can help people make wise decisions based on best guesses and probabilities, but as we all know: no one knows what tomorrow holds!
Thus, life and retirement planning is full of ups and downs.
When we are confronted with that reality, it is very sobering, and it ought to cause us to pause and consider what, exactly, we're putting our hope and confidence in.
Which leads me to ask you that very question:
What, exactly, are YOU putting your hope and confidence in when it comes to your future?

In the financial world, there tend to be two general groups of investors:
Short-term and Long-term investors.
The first group is very speculative and pays close attention to the here and now. The future is the moment in they're currently in and they don't give much thought about tomorrow.
The second group is future-first. They pay attention to long-term trends and worry about how today's investments will pay off for them later.
This is, obviously, a very simplistic take but I hope you know where I'm going with this already.
I believe God wants you to be long-term investors in your eternal future.
You see, you're going to live forever somewhere.
That's the future for us all.
But if you're not careful, your future may look different than you thought if you're more focused on the here and now and not more focused on how your life today impacts your future tomorrow.
Jesus said it this way (and I think we should lean in and listen carefully):
"What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" - Mark 8:36
If you're in Christ, your soul is secure.
But...what if you got there and found out that your half-hearted investment into your future life in heaven was negatively impacted by the way you tried to make your life heaven on earth now instead of later?
I don't want to speak where the Bible doesn't speak, but I know that God is fair and just and will not be mocked. I believe Him when He says that we'll reap what we sow.
Therefore, I want to encourage you and challenge you to invest your life for the eternal future that awaits you!
Don't trade what's going to disappear so quickly today for what's going to last for you forever and ever tomorrow.
Give your all!
Live your best for Christ!
Be the man, husband, and father you're meant to be!
No regrets.
You're investing with your life. Be sure you're thinking long-term when you do!

P.S.
How much would you say you think about heaven and living forever there?
If it's been a while since you have, I'd encourage you to do that right now.
Slow down. Think about it. Recognize how very real it is!
Then, respond accordingly by prioritizing how you live today in light of the future that awaits you.
You'll be so glad you invested your life for a return that's guaranteed to pay you back more than you could imagine!
