- Nate Whitson -
Ever feel like you're failing to lead your family like you're supposed to (or want to)?
I was driving home from work the other day and was mentally preparing myself to come back and serve my family with a great attitude. I had grand visions of leading them in a powerful and life-changing Bible study (you know...since I'm the godly man of the house and everything!).
Well, that might've been what I pictured in my head but that's not exactly what transpired in my home.
Instead, I walked in and it seemed like everyone was in a crappy mood.
The house was a mess.
The dishes hadn't been touched.
And the energy in the house was grumpy.
Bad start to what I hoped would be a great night around God's Word!

I think for many of us dads, we put too much pressure on making "family devotion time" too perfect. Too scripted. Too ideal.
Instead, I've found that having a plan to be intentional about conversations that center around Jesus and then simply watching for the right opportunity to make it happen is the key to long-term success. Especially as your kids get older and schedules get crazy.
Sometimes, family devos happen just like you hoped they would.
Everyone sits together and is fully engaged in rich conversations and everyone is in a great mood.
Other times...not so much.
But it's okay. That's what I want you to hear today.
It's okay.
Do the best you can do based on the way your family works and operates at this stage of life.
When my kids were younger, it was much easier to make it happen because I could simply tell them when to be there on a more consistent basis and they didn't have anywhere else to go.
But today, my kids are busy, often have work or activities that get in the way and we don't always have time to sit as a whole family unit like we used to.
My goal during this season of life (and maybe what your goal should be too): Do what I can to lead my family and have as many conversations about Jesus as possible.
Have a plan.
Be as consistent as you can.
Put it in God's hands.
Nate
P.S.
If you struggle to have the "perfect family devotions" - you're not alone!
In fact, I'd love to hear more from you on this.

Leading your family through seasons of change is difficult. But hang in there dad, it's worth it to keep trying.
