I got this incredible email the other day from a man who went through a program I created to help men quit porn.
It blew me away.
Here's what he said:
"To be honest, if it wasn’t for this ministry and your example, I’m not sure I would have come clean. Like I told her (my wife), for around 23 years (prior to telling you) there wasn’t a single other person who knew about this and I figured it was a secret I would take to my grave. (That thought only drove me deeper into depression and loneliness, of course). I just simply didn’t have the courage or resources to face it. But I do now. So thank you!"
There's 2 powerful things that stand out to me about this testimony.
- Secrets kept covered will kill you. This man held his secret for 23 years and said that it only drove him further into his depression and loneliness. (This is always what happens!)
- Secrets revealed bring life. When we have the courage to tell others our worst secrets and darkest moments, something profound happens. It not only gives us courage to be honest and real...but it does the same thing for other men too! Our courage becomes their courage.
Like this man, I suffered in my sin for a long time and never fully expressed the depths of it for 20+ years.
- Too much shame.
- Too much guilt.
- Too much trying to save face.
But it was killing me the entire time and it made me question so many things - my salvation included.
