5 Habits That Destroy Followers of Jesus
Are You Slowly Drifting from Jesus Without Realizing It?
Most men don’t walk away from Jesus in one dramatic moment — they drift away through small habits they don’t realize are pulling them off course. In this episode, we talk about 5 habits that quietly cause spiritual drift and what you can do to tighten the rope before it snaps.
The Slow Drift Illustration
Imagine a small fishing boat tied to a dock by a thin rope. The rope doesn’t snap all at once. It slowly wears down—friction, weather, pressure—until one day it breaks. That’s how spiritual drift happens. Not through one big rebellion. But through small, unnoticed habits that weaken a man’s walk with Jesus over time.
5 Habits That Cause Spiritual Drift
1. Spiritual Neglect
No Scripture. No prayer. No quiet time. Impact: A man grows spiritually empty and vulnerable. Practical Step: Five minutes a day in Scripture and prayer can change everything. “If I read God’s Word and do what it says, it will change my life.”
2. Isolation
Trying to follow Jesus alone.
Impact: Isolation makes men vulnerable. Just like wolves separate the herd, the enemy targets men who walk alone. Practical Step: Join a men’s group or find one brother to walk with. Ask yourself: Who is pushing me spiritually—and who am I pushing?
3. Compromise
Small sins tolerated become big sins later. Cain’s story reminds us: “Sin is crouching at your door…you must master it, or it will master you.” Impact: Compromise kills conviction. Practical Step: Identify the areas where you’re most likely to compromise and deal with them early—before they grow.
4. Busyness Without Margin
Too busy to sit with Jesus. Too busy to serve. Too busy to obey. Impact: A lack of margin keeps many men from fully following Christ. Practical Step: Learn to say no. Create margin. Put down the noise and busyness the world calls “success.”
5. Pride (Not Repenting Quickly)
“I’m fine.” “I’ve got this.” “I don’t need help.” Impact: Pride numbs the heart and blocks growth. Practical Step: Who really knows how you’re doing? Confession and repentance bring freedom. Secrets lose power when exposed to the light.
Small neglect leads to big drift. If you want to be the follower of Jesus God made you to be, you must recognize drift early—and respond.
